One disadvantage in putting together this advent calendar is the undoubted fact that I know nothing about liturgy and the lectionary.\u00a0Other than my general Advent policy of all Mary, all the time, and a vague notion that penitential texts are called for, I don\u2019t actually know which texts are appropriate, so I constantly have my ears pricked for hints.<\/p>\n

Anyway, someone on my friendslist helpfully mentioned in passing that Psalm 18 is commonly read for the second Sunday in Advent.\u00a0Score!\u00a0Except that I don\u2019t actually know any settings of Psalm 18 off the top of my head.\u00a0 Not such a score…\u00a0Fortunately, I am entirely shameless in my pursuit of Advent music, and have absolutely no hesitation in getting on Google and searching \u2018Psalm 18 Bach\u2019 \u2018Psalm 18 Mendelssohn\u2019 \u2018Psalm 18 Handel\u2019 \u2018Psalm 18 Schutz\u2019 until something comes up\u2026<\/p>\n

I hit the jackpot on \u2018Schutz\u2019, with more entries than I could poke a stick at. On closer inspection, this turned out to be because the word \u2018schutz\u2019 actually means refuge in German, and this particular psalm is all about the Lord being one\u2019s help and refuge, so \u2018schutz\u2019 comes up pretty often.\u00a0Still, if\u00a0my<\/em>\u00a0name meant something interesting, I\u2019d be composing music with that word in it all the time.\u00a0On this principal, I tried \u2018Psalm 18 Heinrich Sch\u00fctz\u2019 (yes, with umlaut this time), and voil\u00e0!\u00a0Not just Psalm 18, but Psalm 18 as an alto solo!<\/p>\n

I always suspected Sch\u00fctz was on my side.<\/p>\n

On the other hand\u2026 I just don\u2019t know what to make of this piece of music.\u00a0I feel as though I should like it more than I do.\u00a0I mean, it\u2019s an alto solo!\u00a0And it\u2019s Sch\u00fctz \u2013 the man who perpetrated that fabulous Rorate Coeli<\/a>!\u00a0How can it be bad?\u00a0I suspect that if I spoke German better, I\u2019d love it \u2013 it feels as though it\u2019s doing the awesome Gibbons thing of following vocal inflections and speech rhythms, and is reminding me of a verse anthem, only without the anthem bits (this would be awesome with some choral sections).<\/p>\n

But there is something about it, nonetheless.\u00a0I can tell, because I\u2019ve just listened to it twice in a row, and I\u2019m fascinated enough that I\u2019d probably listen to it a couple more times if Andrew weren\u2019t sitting next to me, trying to not be driven insane by my musical choices.<\/p>\n

I think I\u2019d like to sing this sometime.\u00a0But I think I will have to improve my German first.<\/p>\n

Edited in December 17: And can I find this recording, or indeed any other with a female alto now?\u00a0 Indeed I cannot!\u00a0 So here is Matteo Messori singing it, and sounding very lovely and not deserving any of my resentment that he is a male alto!\u00a0 (It’s actually a very lovely interpretation, I’m just sulking.)<\/em><\/p>\n
