{"id":674,"date":"2015-12-24T09:00:26","date_gmt":"2015-12-23T22:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/catesings.org\/?p=674"},"modified":"2015-12-24T09:00:26","modified_gmt":"2015-12-23T22:00:26","slug":"advent-calendar-day-26-oratorio-de-noel-saint-saens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/catesings.catespeaks.net\/index.php\/2015\/12\/24\/advent-calendar-day-26-oratorio-de-noel-saint-saens\/","title":{"rendered":"Advent Calendar Day 26: Oratorio de No\u00ebl (Saint Saens)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Christmas Eve, which means that we are nearly at the end of our Advent journey.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know about you, but I&#8217;ll be spending the day cooking and baking for tomorrow, probably while listening to music.\u00a0 Will it be Christmas music?\u00a0 At the time of writing this post, Christmas is still a week and a half away, and I&#8217;m not tired of Christmas music yet, but there are four work choir concerts, one carol service, one carolling evening, carols at a nursing home, and numerous rehearsals for same standing between me and Christmas Eve, so it&#8217;s entirely possible that I&#8217;ll be a bit done with Christmas music by that point.\u00a0 Then again, I have not yet completed my annual re-watch of Claus Guth&#8217;s gorgeously sung, but notably bonkers staging of Handel&#8217;s Messiah, and that really never gets old, so perhaps that&#8217;s how I&#8217;ll be spending some of my day.<\/p>\n<p>This year will be the first Christmas Eve in over a decade that I haven&#8217;t been singing in a Catholic midnight mass somewhere.\u00a0 Instead, I have the very great pleasure of joining the Toorak Uniting Church for their performance of Camille Saint Saens&#8217; Oratorio de No\u00ebl, for which I am the alto soloist.\u00a0 I&#8217;m very much looking forward to this &#8211; I haven&#8217;t sung this piece before, and it&#8217;s very lovely.\u00a0 And the company will be excellent, too &#8211; I very much enjoy singing with this group.<\/p>\n<p>So today, I&#8217;m going to share with you this lovely recording of the Oratorio, sung by the Mainz Bach Choir.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a great recording &#8211; I love the soloists, and the choir and orchestra are excellent.\u00a0 And Mainz holds a special place in my heart, as one of my dearest friends is from there.\u00a0 I must find out whether this is the choir her mother sings in &#8211; alas, I&#8217;m fairly certain it isn&#8217;t the orchestra she plays with (and even if it were, this piece has a distinct lack of flute in it).\u00a0 But it&#8217;s still a nice connection.<\/p>\n<p>Saint Saens&#8217; oratorio is not a long piece, as oratorios go &#8211; it will only entertain you for about half an hour of your Christmas Eve baking.\u00a0 Nor is it a dramatic piece &#8211; it&#8217;s mostly very gentle and pastoral in tone.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve copied an English translation of the lyrics below.\u00a0 Wishing you a peaceful Christmas Eve!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Camille Saint-Sa\u00ebns: Oratorio de No\u00ebl (Christmas Oratorio) - Diethard Hellmann (Audio video)\" width=\"474\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EpaeGERnEyA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>1.
