{"id":510,"date":"2013-12-04T09:00:42","date_gmt":"2013-12-03T22:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/catesings.org\/?p=510"},"modified":"2013-12-04T09:00:42","modified_gmt":"2013-12-03T22:00:42","slug":"advent-calendar-day-4-prepare-ye-the-way-of-the-lord-michael-wise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/catesings.catespeaks.net\/index.php\/2013\/12\/04\/advent-calendar-day-4-prepare-ye-the-way-of-the-lord-michael-wise\/","title":{"rendered":"Advent Calendar Day 4: Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord (Michael Wise)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now that we&#8217;ve seen what Handel does with<em> Every Valley <\/em> and Isaiah generally, I thought it might be fun to see what someone else does with the same text.\u00a0 Also, of course, we sang this piece on Sunday and I loved it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>[youtube=http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Z4ZeM1KLMlM&#038;w=420&#038;h=315]<\/p>\n<p>Michael Wise was born nearly forty years before Handel, but died quite young &#8211; in a duel, if I recall correctly &#8211; so their paths did not cross.\u00a0 And nor did their music.\u00a0 If you thought that Handel liked to show off occasionally\u00a0 by using music to illustrate the words, well, he had nothing on Wise, who took this to an extreme degree.\u00a0 I especially like &#8216;the crooked shall be made straight&#8217;, and later &#8216;get the up into the mountains&#8217;, though the bit where the grass withereth is also good.\u00a0 Wise feels much earlier than Handel, to my ear.\u00a0 Where Handel pretty much wrote the book on English Baroque Oratorios, Wise was still playing with verse anthems, and harks back much more to Gibbons in his style of composing.\u00a0 Which is better?\u00a0 I really couldn&#8217;t say.\u00a0 I&#8217;d hate to do without either of them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Now that we&#8217;ve seen what Handel does with Every Valley and Isaiah generally, I thought it might be fun to see what someone else does with the same text.\u00a0 Also, of course, we sang this piece on Sunday and I loved it immediately.
