{"id":447,"date":"2013-05-20T07:30:43","date_gmt":"2013-05-19T21:30:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/catesings.org\/?p=447"},"modified":"2013-05-20T07:30:43","modified_gmt":"2013-05-19T21:30:43","slug":"monday-music-the-cold-genius-henry-purcell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/catesings.catespeaks.net\/index.php\/2013\/05\/20\/monday-music-the-cold-genius-henry-purcell\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Music: The Cold Genius (Henry Purcell)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">It was absolutely necessary that I find a counter-tenor song for today, since I&#8217;m still so very disappointed that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=VgHWFiavqjA\">Cezar<\/a>&#8216;s magnificent counter-tenor effort on Eurovision didn&#8217;t do better, but it&#8217;s after midnight as I schedule this, and I have to work tomorrow, so was really not up for trolling the internet in search of the perfect piece of music.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Fortunately, it turns out that I had, stashed away in my list of things to write about, Andreas Scholl singing the Aria &#8220;What Power art Thou&#8221;, also known as the song of the Cold Genius, from Purcell&#8217;s King Arthur.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>[youtube http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=g7ESonXLbkk&amp;version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">I&#8217;m not entirely sure what the plot of King Arthur is.\u00a0 From all I can gather, it is technically about King Arthur fighting the Saxons, but it also seems to owe a lot to Shakespeare&#8217;s play, <em>The Tempest<\/em>.\u00a0 This song seems to be sung by a spirit of frost or ice, summoned by one of King Arthur&#8217;s enemies.\u00a0 I love it for the way the voice of the singer seems to shudder and jerk with cold even as he sings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Scholl sings it beautifully &#8211; he really sounds desperately, desperately cold, as he should.
