{"id":255,"date":"2013-01-25T07:30:08","date_gmt":"2013-01-24T20:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/catesings.org\/?p=255"},"modified":"2013-01-25T07:30:08","modified_gmt":"2013-01-24T20:30:08","slug":"friday-fun-an-abridged-history-of-western-music-cadenza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/catesings.catespeaks.net\/index.php\/2013\/01\/25\/friday-fun-an-abridged-history-of-western-music-cadenza\/","title":{"rendered":"Friday Fun: An Abridged History of Western Music (Cadenza)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So there&#8217;s this group of talented and slightly bonkers classical musicians called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/collectivecadenza?feature=watch\">Cadenza<\/a>, who I&#8217;m beginning to believe can do anything at all, musically speaking.\u00a0 They write orchestral compositions based on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ECYkqdx8ueQ\">mobile phone ringtones<\/a>, they busk as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Pbdewwtm70w\">human jukebox<\/a>, they introduce kids to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CLSUHj8HTiA\">classical music<\/a>, and they sing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Y_OzM2mE_uo\">lyrics that aren&#8217;t lyrics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And they sing &#8220;It&#8217;s a Wonderful World&#8221; as Louis Armstrong could never have envisaged it&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>[youtube http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qOZb7KeJUQ8?rel=0]What I find impressive about this &#8211; aside from the consummate cleverness of it &#8211; is how impeccably each genre is sung.\u00a0 The Gregorian chant is spot on, as is the Baroque, the Jazz, the Disco, the Rap&#8230; and all the even more recent genres that I&#8217;ve never even heard of, being lost in classical music land for the most part.<br \/>\nMy only quibble is that they only spend about half a minute on the pre-20th century stuff before heading into marching band territory.\u00a0 I realise that the 20th century was a pretty innovative time, musically speaking, but I&#8217;d have liked to hear a few more forays into the world of classical music &#8211; wouldn&#8217;t you like to know what Strauss might have done with this?\u00a0 Or Carl Orff?\u00a0 Or even Verdi?Still magnificent stuff, however, and I&#8217;ve just subscribed to their channel.\u00a0 I do warn you &#8211; once you start listening to this group, you will be there all morning&#8230;Or you could just have a listen to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=E2VCwBzGdPM\">Louis Armstrong<\/a>&#8216;s version of <em>It&#8217;s A Wonderful World<\/em>, of course.\u00a0 I find that, for all the magnificence of Cadenza&#8217;s interpretations, Armstrong sounds even better after listening to what they&#8217;ve done with it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So there&#8217;s this group of talented and slightly bonkers classical musicians called Cadenza, who I&#8217;m beginning to believe can do anything at all, musically speaking.\u00a0 They write orchestral compositions based on mobile phone ringtones, they busk as a human jukebox, they introduce kids to classical music, and they sing lyrics that aren&#8217;t lyrics.
